Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Home Care Package?
A Home Care Package is government-subsidised care support that allows you to live at home while receiving professional care services. You choose your approved provider and the services you need within your allocated funding level.
Who is eligible for a Home Care Package?
Generally, you must be over 65 (or 50+ for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people), have an aged care assessment, and be assessed as needing care support. Your financial situation may also affect your eligibility and contribution costs.

How long does it take to get a Home Care Package?
Wait times vary by location and service demand, but the assessment process typically takes 2-4 weeks once you contact My Aged Care. After approval, it usually takes 2-4 weeks to connect with a provider.
Can I change my care provider?
Yes, you can change providers if you wish. Notify My Aged Care and your current provider of your intention to switch. You retain your Home Care Package allocation and simply redirect it to a new provider.
What happens if my care needs change?
You can request a reassessment at any time if your needs change significantly. This may result in a different funding level. Regular care reviews with your provider ensure your plan remains appropriate.
Are there costs involved?
Home Care Packages are partially government-funded, but you may contribute based on your income and assets. Your provider will explain all costs transparently. Some individuals qualify for full government funding.
What services can I access?
Services may include personal care, nursing care, domestic support, meal preparation, companionship, respite care, and more. Your care plan is personalized to your specific needs and preferences.
